Ah the 50s ! After the years of recession, shortages and anxiety due to the Second World War, we aspired to more lightness and we rediscovered time for ourselves.
Lthe tailors are returning to work. We use new textiles, easier to wear and work with. We are redesigning women's clothing. Above all, we are rediscovering the female body : marked waist, highlighted chest, notably with this funny invention that is the shell-shaped bra, skirts and dresses adorned with petticoats to give even more volume.
LHaute Couture houses dress the greatest like
Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly.
LWomen are forced to return to their homes after being called upon to replace men in factories in particular. They take care of their home and their family. Regression for some, no doubt, but it is to forget that with the thirty glorious years and the American Way of Life which is exported thanks to the cinema in particular : it is the time of the boom cars, household appliances and leisure activities.
Lleisure activities are also an opportunity for men, women and children to focus attention on their outfit. It is not uncommon to see father and son dressed identically, the same for mother and daughter.
LLadies will also not neglect to correctly match accessories and clothes : handbag, pumps, hats or scarves. Everything is thought out down to the smallest detail, including the pastel-colored makeup.
Remember, these
trapeze dresses for day or evening which dressed women then. Buttoned over the entire length or just the top for the day and household chores, the dresses are adorned with pretty details for outings, when they are not richer fabrics like silk or even velvet for a cocktail party for example. .
And it is with a certain casualness that even today some women choose these dresses, because they are comfortable, easy to wear whatever the occasion and with a very confident style.
If you prefer a vintage look that highlights women's curves a little more, then your model, just like me, will be another Hollywood star. I named Marilyn Monroe, who highlighted pencil skirts and sheath dresses, without forgetting this famous trapeze dress with a bare back, flying above a subway grate New- Yorker, in the film “ Seven years of reflection ”.
So, ready to stand out with the style of the
50s?
